Felix Gonzalez-Torres produced these pieces in 1991 when his partner Ross Laycock was dying of AIDS

Untitled (Perfect Lovers) 1991

The clocks in this piece are identical and are set to the exact same time, in unison they tick along like two heartbeats until eventually they fall out of sync, it could happen for a variety of reasons, perhaps there is a manufactures fault or a freak accident, more likely ones battery will just die before the others, it is inevitable, they will always eventually fall out of sync.

175 lbs of candy in bright celephone wrappers are left in the corner of a gallery, the weight Ross was when healthy, viewers can take some candy if they wish and soon the pile depletes more and more candy is added but the pile is always depleted and we are all complicit in it’s disappearance.
